Well, yes, the recording is very cloudy & boomy. Lately I've been liking a little of that, though: low-fi ambience & aesthetics are really part of the GD expereince. But Garcia has mastered his Stratocaster by this time, having spent most of the last 5 years playing guitars with humbucking pickups, and the sharper tone of the Strat really helps cut through some of the mist of this recording. Still, this is a tape that requires some deep listening. I think the Dark Star is one of the best ever, more like a '68 than a typical '72 but with musical ideas they never would have come up with in '68.

OMG this show is amazing. I am not good at writing about music technically but this Dark Star>Sugar Magnolia transition is OUTSTANDING. I cant stress it enuff - if u haven't heard it before that is. As for Sugar Mag I prefer the song in '77-'78 but I do love the 1972 versions. Esp the Europe tour, maybe its just me but it seems like the song is played extra well this tour. Billy K is on fire throughout - particularly he shines on the NFA>GDTRFB>NFA his drumming is Godlike I tell ya. Geez I forgot about the Good Lovin' sandwich too. So much energy and joy in this 2nd set. Incredible stuff. I have this show in SBD hit me up if u want a copy or wanna trade for any 1970-1972 shows.

This is an unbelievable show during a legendary and great European tour. As other have noted, the Dark Star (and transition to Sugar Mags) is amazing and the Good Lovin' "sandwich" is off the chain. Also, note the China Cat tease at the beginning of GDTRFB.

I was really bummed when this run of soundboards got pulled from the archive... it was a few months before the entire plug got pulled, all these Europe shows and also the Fillmore West 1969 shows which were recently released, got pulled at the same time along with 8-27-72 and some others.... so a long term release strategy may be in the works for this show, which would be wonderful because this is one of the hottest of the tour, right out of the gate with Jerry feeling really inspired. Classic Dark Star and also one of my favorite Playin in the Bands. I highly recommend downloading this above-average-for-1972 audience recording until a nice mixed release emerges

Revision to the below:
After downloading and listening to most of this, I'm sorry to say the sound ranges from barely to not at all listenable. It's muddy all the way through. The keyboards and even the drums dissolve into a mush. There are pitch warbling spots and dropouts, including two really nasty, long ones in Truckin' and Dark Star. Worst of all, I couldn't make out hardly a word Pigpen was singing during Good Lovin', and finally had to turn it off. I'll stick with my very speedy soundboard until a true upgrade comes along.
I already know this show is awesome, since I've had a speedy tape of the key parts of it (Truckin, Dark Star, Sugar Mag, Good Lovin, etc.) for years. The fast jam in Dark Star is ecstatic, and Pig's at his salacious best on the Good Lovin' medley (hop in the saddle and ride). Listening to it now, it's not as crispy as a SB, but quite listenable and very good for a 72 audience tape. I will be downloading this one when I get a block of free time.
